|
|
Hi, folks
Been searching all over the web for anything related to goalies communicating with their defence, but seems little is to be found.
The last season was my second in the net, and just now, during off-season drills I've started to get used to the feeling that a goalie, besides his/her own stick, pads, gloves and ... errr, skills should have, at least to some extent, more than just those at his/her command, namely, the defense and other players.
Beeing a beer league team, no one of us have clear understanding though as to how this aspect should be adressed properly. It's a guess on my side that there should be some basics, tips and tricks for proper communication with defence, some knowledge floating around in the goalies world, no?
So, I'm giving it a shot by starting this thread in hopes that it would gather some input the community would benefit from. |

Talk to your team before a game and let them know what you will say or do in different situations during the game and let them know what you expect them to do. Work out some easy signals for them. One or two words work best, since they generally won't have time to stop and listen to a full sentence. _________________

OK, thanks for chiming in everybody!
I don't think there is a problem or something.. Rather I think what could be of interest to more than one novice goalie goes along the lines of canadian_man's post.
"Work out some easy signals for them" - there there... My guess when starting this thread was that there should be some "classic" signals and hints for timing.. |

Any 1 or 2 word command can work great. It's gotta be short, sweet and to the point so that they don't need much thought process to figure out what you're saying
Common phrases/sayings that I use:
"Man on!" - there's a player directly behind you who wants the puck
"Look!" - You have about 3 seconds to take a look before you lose the puck
"Time!" - Lots of time, there's nobody around you.
"Screen!" - GET OUT OF MY WAY I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING
"Feet" - The puck is in your feet, stop looking around.
"Middle!" - The middle of the ice is clear, make the pass.
"Skate It!" - you have a clear open lane, skate the damn puck up.
That's pretty much it I have a few others that I've worked out with my defense over the years.
Hope this helps _________________

"man on" when the player is coming from behind or from the side.
"head up" when the player is coming from the front.
"two on" if two players are coming after him
"slow chase" if a player is following him slowly but not pressuring
"control it" if they are dumping it too much needlessly.
"Boards" if i want him to dump or pass along the boards
"around" if I want him to dump or pass it around the net
Just be consistent with the terms you use and make sure they can't be mixed with other words. |

Pretty much the same terms I use, although I also throw in a "clear" now and then when there's been a lot of pressure in the zone and a couple guys need to change. It basically tells the guy with the puck to clear the zone and get the heck off the ice for some fresher guys.
Another term that I haven't seen anyone else post yet, but may be the most important goalie command of all of them. When one of your defense is back trying to tell you how to play nets, a good "f*** off" usually works pretty well. _________________

| My team only listens to me about... 1/3 to 1/2 the time. If i'm lucky that is... But as everyone has pointed out, Gotta be quick, and ya gotta be loud. But i believe it's key for a goaltender to speak to their players. This is still my first full season of play in net, and i can safely say i've learned a lot. And one of those things is that goaltenders tend to become the proverbial surveillance system on the ice. I know personally speaking I watch everything my team is doing and then speak to them when i can (Usually during intermission). |
