That's real strange. In well over 20 years of holding my stick like that I've never caught a puck in the finger. There's been a few times where I've pinched the tip of my finger between the edge of the paddle and the ice when going down though.
What's real strange and I'm trying to figure this out is another goalie I know here in town just broke his middle finger on his blocker hand. He said he was down, his stick got knocked out of his hand, and when the rebound shot came in he just instinctively reached up with his blocker like he was going to catch the puck and it caught him square in the finger and snapped it like a twig. _________________

it's the proper way to hold a stick, and i've never had a puck hit my like that either, but i have pinched my finger against the ice too...
years ago when i was... 13 or 14, another goalie i knew did the same thing, reaching up to catch the puck w/ his hand after the stick had been knocked away... broke his hand i think... I've seen goalies take time to train themselves to use the back of their blocker when they're stick is gone rather than the instinctive grab _________________ Because it hurts so good.

I've had that pinching thing happen a lot, but it's never been troublesome. Pucks to the fingers, though-apparently that's a problem for me. One of the other goalies in my women's league said she's been hit there a few times. Hockey's just dangerous like that. I don't plan on playing with my finger down the paddle again until this has completely healed. I've been able to control my stick pretty well, so I don't know if or when I'll go back to the "proper way". I do have to consider that I am just a recreational player, but I am a musician, so I can't be sacrificing fingers on a regular basis. _________________

Hey I played the flute for grade 9 music class
Could never get the hang of which way to blow into the d**n thing though... the teacher spent half the class time making me look stupid because I couldn't get a d**n sound out of it.
and now that I re-read that... I realize just how wrong it sounds |

Oh, puh-leeze.
Clarinet, not flute. I'm not going to say anything more for fear of my comments being twisted. _________________

| Isn't the clarinet like twice as big around and twice as long as the flute? Hmm.... |

Z - there's no protection from these guys. They'll twist anything you say... especially Arth. |

So I had been reading about this injury since you posted it thinking how it could happen, and guess what, i lost my nail on my index finger just last tuesday, started bleeding through my glove. I just taped my finger up, and kept going, but I can't believe this actually happened to me! _________________ 6'1" 185 lbs.
