New to goalie here, pretty big guy just playing pick up games.
I was wondering if there is any low profile chest/arm protectors out there? (although alot of it is beer gut I know that) and also if there are any other bigger goalies out there and if you have any tips.
I do have one more question. The butterfly, are your knees facing down and the pads roatating out, or are your knees and pads facing out?
Would anyone be willing to take a pic without pads so I could see front and back? |

I don't know exactly what you're classifying as 'big' but i'm not exactly what one would call small. I'm just over 5'10, so not overly tall... (more or less average) but am most definitely festively plump, big boned, and gravitationally gifted. (In the 240 range)
Also, I am new to goalie (er, newish, hadn't played in 10+ years before last Sept., and haven't had time since around November of last year. been tryin to find some people with evening ice time so it doesn't interfere with family time)
I use the RBK xpulse 6.0 C/A, and well, the rest of the stuff should be listed in my sig. Didn't feel the need to get really good stuff as I didn't even know how well i'd do, or how often i'd play... if I start playing more in the future, i'm looking towards getting a better set of pads/cathcer/blocker (likely smiths... they seem to have a good reputation in here) I've had no major issues with the rbk equipment though, seeing as I've only been playing shinny/pick up. I'm hopefully joining an adult league next winter, but in a rather inexperienced division.
As for my bfly (when i use it, as being my size, i'm somewhat out of shape, and my endurance needs some work... but i'm not completely unathletic) my knees are positioned so that it's like i was kneeling, sitting on my feet , but then raised my body up, and swung my legs out as far as was comfortable. so knees basically straight down inside of my feet facing the ice, and the pads are rotated so that they're covering more of the sides of your calfs as opposed to the fronts. then when you get up, they should slide back into place at the front of your shins. (i know, they go higher than that, but i figure you get the idea...)
i think some people here probably have some decent pictures, or are able to find some on the web of good positioning.
as far as tips, you'll want to work on angles alot, as you might not have the mobility to cover for bad positioning. pracitice going up and down into your bfly and out.... in your living room or whatever... get it to become an instinct, and also to increase your endurance. (something i really need to start doing again). flexability is probably also a concern to bigger goalies, i know it is for me... again something i should start working on again (ie. yoga/pilates seemed to help for me previously)
also good things to do would be to just skate in your full equipment, get used to moving in it... skating laps, and also just moving in the crease... and then also stickhandling. i'm still working on that one... it's a little bit down in my priorities list, as i could always just cover the puck, or wait for a teammate to skate closer to get a lame pass... but a breakout pass or clearing shot would be something good for the repertoire.
now it seems like i've typed alot, which is odd as I'm probably one of the least experience people on here... but being on the hefty side, i figured i might have some relevant input. hope it helped at least a little. _________________ random spelling mistakes added on purpose to annoy those that are annoyed by it. |

BobbyLou was also a member of the forum who claimed to be 6'10", 240 lbs., use two blockers instead of a glove, and that he was the big goalie from the Amstel Light commercial. After he claimed to be the Amstel Light guy we all kinda stopped believing him... _________________ That's what she said!

I don't know if you've ever seen Giguere, but he looks pretty big with his equipment on. _________________ Marc-Andre Fleury ROCKS!
