Well i always played goalie in street hockey with my freinds, so this year i figured i would play goalie in ice hockey got all my gear did alot of research on techniques. You can only research so much, but you gotta practise it, so i went to the arena to play shinny, and everyone not knowing it was my 1st time, they went straight to the game with like 5 mins to warm up. in this 5 min period. i had to learn how to play goalie on ice real quick.
1st thing i tried out was drop into butterfly, and slide from side to side, was easy, when your not trying to save a puck. lol
another thing, i never had a crease in street hockey so generally im always out of position.
- didnt tie my toe ties right ended up skating on em and cutting them. (im playing in player skates (kinda guessd on tieing them right))
since its shinny my defense men were unreliable. and slot was alyways open, so when i went from one side to the other there was no way getting back to that one side after fully commiting to the other side. (If that makes sense)
those were my main problems. i had soo much fun a Great workout and plan on playing ALOT more this year and hope i can get decent enough to play on a rec team I know my errors for tommorow so ill keep this thread updated once in a while. |

Finally made my ice debut this week and had a blast! I skated a lot as a kid but have never played hockey and am coming from a floor hockey background for the last 3 years. It was open hockey and there were only two goalies so I played for 2 1/2 hrs straight(switching ends every time a team got to 5 goals)with enough time to get a drink and back at it...pretty tired by the end but won two of the five and felt good about that for the first time on the ice.
Most goals I gave up were on breakouts of one-on-one, two-on-one, one-on-none or two-on-none against A/B level players(not a lot of defense being played) I found I used most of my energy staying balanced on the ice and will have more energy to actually make saves as I become more stable. I will be back out there in a couple weeks to give it another go and look to join a C-beginner league in the fall...can't wait!!! One guy told me afterward I was the best goalie he'd seen for their first time on ice-not sure if that was pity or pat-on-the-back
In my other life, we earned the 1 seed for floor hockey playoffs after I registered my second shutout of the season this week...the night after I played on ice-no small coincidence I'm convinced. Well, just wanted to share my excitement...looking forward to more stories in the future. |

That great.
You will learn several things, one that in drop in sessions, unless you happen several guys prepping for tryouts, or guys who play together and against each other, all the stuff is pretty toned down and there are a lot of odd man rushes.
You will always be complemted at drop ins, because none of the players have fun playing post.
3 I would be the guy was not lying to you. keep at it, and dont be afraid to ask for advice of guys when your out there. _________________

| Thanks for the advice R2MN. I'm not afraid to ask questions and will take any chance I get to learn something. I could probably learn some things by videotaping myself and watching it like itechwarrior did... |
